Ocean racing remains a sport that emanates challenge, enthusiasm and adventure, as the popularity of this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race, which currently stands at a record-setting 318 entries, proves.

The start signal for first class in the 2011 edition of the Rolext Fasnet Race will sound at 11.00 BST on Sunday 14th August. As the fleet head out to sea and with the current weather forecast uncertain, the crews, from all corners of the globe, will be sure of one thing only: a journey awaits.

“The name of this great game is ocean racing, and it is also known as the king of sports.” So proclaimed Joseph Weston Martyr, the inspiration behind the creation of the Fastnet Race, supported by Rolex since 2001. Some 86 years after the first race was run, and whilst the evolution of both the event and yacht racing can only be described as immense, Martyr would be proud that his mantra stands as tall today as it did in 1925.

Q: My friend is selling me a 2003 Rolex Air King with no date. I was wondering if I was getting a good deal. He is selling it for 2500. Please let me know what you think.

A: Air Kings and especially dateless Air Kings are the least expensive Rolex watches and that is reflected in their used pricing. What will determine wether or not this is a good deal is what you intend to do with it. The value will initially continue to decrease but it will level out. If you plan on keeping this watch a LONG time, it may appreciate. If you are looking at this as a first step but plan to buy a "better" Rolex when the time comes, you will lose money when you resell it. I wear a 1947 Air King that belonged to my grandfather. While it is a very different watch than what you are looking at, I can tell you that your future grandchild will appreciate the watch when the time comes, and it will still run. Also, from a style standpoint, the other Rolex watches are a little too much for me. Good luck.

A: The Air King is the so called "intro" to the line, and is a collection. They are the least expensive Rolex you will find.

Oyster Perpetual describes the automatic Rolex models. Oyster describes their water resistant nature, and perpetual means it will run pretty much forever since it is automatic.

So, the Air King is an oyster perpetual.
