After many months of planning, California's The French Laundry restaurant has arrived in Harrods. Frequently cited as America's best restaurant, the 70-cover institution has been replicated in exacting detail in Harrods' Georgian Restaurant, where it remains from October 1-10. Fixtures, fittings, staff and ingredients have been imported from the original restaurant for the opening, and head chef Thomas Keller will preside over the kitchen throughout its tenure in London. As in California, diners savour nine courses over lunch or dinner, with the cost of the meal coming in at £250. By all accounts the food is exceptional and the standards of service exemplary, but at a time when Londoners' discretionary income is being cut to the bone is it acceptable to expect diners to pay such high prices?
