If there was a shred of hope in the sad demise of Amy Winehouse, it arrived in her last public appearance. A week after she was booed off stage, drunk and incoherent in Belgrade, the troubled icon turned up at the Roundhouse to cheer on her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, the precociously talented 15-year-old soul singer.

Midway through Bromfield's 20-minute set, Winehouse walked shyly on to the stage and gave her young friend an unsteady hug, before dancing and clapping through Bromfield's hit 'Mama Said'. She refused the microphone when Bromfield offered it, preferring to let her protégée enjoy the spotlight. When the song was over, Winehouse embraced Bromfield again and encouraged the crowd to buy her album, before disappearing stage right. Winehouse baby-sat Bromfield when she was small, taught her to play the guitar, signed her to her Lioness Records label when she was just 13, and continued to support her apprentice to the end. 'Not only is she my godmother, she's my boss and mentor. So three for the price of one,' Bromfield told me on the day after the gig - two days before Winehouse was found dead in her Camden flat.
