CES preview: three e-readers to watch in 2010

All signs indicate that the e-reader is to CES 2010 what the razor-thin LED-backlit TV was to CES 2009—a technology whose time in the commercial spotlight is now at hand, and which will make a huge, multi-vendor push into the market in the coming year. A whole raft of e-reader devices and technologies will be on display at next week’s CES—were I to cover all of them, this article would run for many pages. This being the case, in this short preview I’ll offer a quick look at three of the most promising e-reader efforts that we’ll be watching closely for this year’s CES coverage.

The Plastic Logic QUE

First on the list is the QUE, from Plastic Logic, a company with e-reader technology that we’ve been covering since at least 2007. Like many of the others that will debut at CES, the QUE’s display is E-Ink-based. But, unlike other E-Ink readers, the QUE’s display is printed on a flexible, plastic backplane that will make the device lighter and more robust. QUE also sports a 8.5×11 inch screen, so that it can display printed business documents at their full size without scaling.

Aside from its form factor and enormous screen size, the other advantage the QUE has over its non-Sony competitors is a touch-based interface. Users will flick a finger across the display to change places, or tap to select items. Unlike the Nook, the action takes place on a single screen.

Hermès opens first watch corner in Rustan's Makati; eclectic music radio opens

The legendary French luxury brand, Hermès, has opened its very first watch corner in the country at Rustan’s Makati Silver Vault.

Hermès, dahlings, is, of course, the prestigious French high-fashion house established in 1837, and today specializes in leather goods and accessories, as well as watches, scarves, ties and other luxury goods.

The new store displays an eye-popping selection of assortment of watches, from the fashionable Kelly watches to the complicated movement watches such as the Dressage Perpetual Calendar.

Tall and très charmant Jerome Souman, GM of La Montre Hermès Southeast Asia, and Lyn Chan, marketing and communications manager, jetted in from Singapore to be très visable during the formal launch, dahlings.

Q: I'm looking for a watch that keeps time with analogue mechanisms, but displays time digitally by means of dials, split-flaps, or some other mechanical means of manipulating the display of numbers. I think the fact that this:

Q: If I wear a watch that has both analog and digital displays AND a magnetic golf bracelet (trion:z) on the same wrist will it affect my watch in any way? (The watch is from eddie bauer and wasn't very expensive, if that makes a difference.)

A: The digital is not affected. The analog display might be just digitally controlled, so no affect either.
