Booming business of fear: Sales of safes soar

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Amid the market turmoil , sales of security safes and vaults have spiked. While some shoppers sought to protect whatever valuables they had left, others needed a place to stash their newly-acquired safe haven assets such as gold and cash.

Port Charlotte, Fla.-based Value Safes said it sold an average of $13,000 in safes a day in the past week, more than tripling its daily average of $3,500 from the previous week. On Amazon.com (

Maximum Security, which sells safes for jewelry, coins, guns and other valuables, said it has seen demand climb by more than 30% over the past two weeks.

"People are just plain scared," said Nancy Bryan, owner of Santa Ana, Calif.-based Maximum Security, who noted that sales started increasing about three years ago at the onset of the recession.

"What is happening to our financial markets is the most recent addition," she added. "Folks are worried about the decreasing value of the dollar, burglaries on the rise in their neighborhoods ... and even the possibility that the unrest we are seeing in other parts of the world slipping over to our country."

I can remember when I had to wind my own watch daily.
And then, in the early 70's, they came out with automatic, self-winding watches that operated by the movement of the wearer's arm.
And then, if it was left in the drawer, it wouldn't be wound and so, watch winders were invented so that they didn't just stop.
And with quartz watches now, no winding is necessary as a battery takes care of all that.

So, we must be talking about an old watch that is still self-winding. And expensive enough that a $600 watch winder is necessary. Implying that the watch is an incredibly LOT more expensive than the watche winder. Which makes me wonder, WHY would somebody spend THAT kind of money on a watch to leave it in a drawer and then spend even more so that it doesn't run down???

And then, to top it all off, somebody has such an expensive watch that they can afford such an expensive accessory and THEN ask about it on Yahoo! Answers???

Q: Watch winders appear to be expensive. is it possible to make a homemade watchwinder for my automatic watch? anyway, is it possible to make it rotate alternatively (clockwise AND counterclockwise)?
What kind of motor or device do I need so that it rotates in both directions?

A: I don't see where it would be a major task to build one. It needs to rock back and forth. If it just went in one direction it wouldn't wind the watch. Just get a small motor with a round plate on it. Attach an arm to the plate over to a holder for your watch so the arm makes the holder rock back and forth. You only need about 1 or 2 oscillations per second. It maybe won't be as neat or fancy as a commercial one, but should work fine. Good luck.
