“There was so little found in that pile of rubble,” said Jim Bristow, who lost the house he shared with wife, Linda, in Mesilla Park.

“When they can carry everything off in two belly-dump trucks ...” Linda said, not finishing the thought. “I want to do something like make an album. I saved all the newspaper pictures. I can look at the pictures, but I can’t study them.”

The fires destroyed 70 homes in Potter and Randall counties and caused an estimated $13 million in damage. Although there is not an official count, many Mesilla Park homeowners have rebuilt.

On a fireplace mantel in the living room of their new home, the Bristows keep a few reminders, including a smoky plaque shattered by the heat, then reconstructed by their son.

“He asked if we wanted the cracks to show, and I said let them show,” Linda said.

Q: I have had allergies to all kind of watches (plastic, metal, material and leather). The only ones that work are necklace ones as they let air get to my skin more, but I can't find any that won't turn my skin green through them not being a proper jewelary metal. Can anyone help please?
Sorry. When I have my allergy it makes my skin red, swollen and VERY itchy. I know that this is ezcema but my cream cleans it up (during which I can't wear my watch) but it happens again within a week. It is driving me crazy!

A: You have a problem that I have had in a few customers. It appears to be a sensitivity to some metals. Copper, zinc, aluminum, or nickel are the main culprits. Most watches have either stainless steel backs or some type of gold plated band or buckle. Stainless steel is a high nickle content steel and most plated items have a combination of the other metals.
Your only solution is to wear high gold content watches and bands.
Gold is a metal that is totally safe as it does not have the ability of reacting to the human body, it is biologically inert. I have not heard of one documented case of gold allergy.

9 or 10 carat unfortunately has a 35 to 37% copper content , so you might experience problems. Gold plated watches might be OK for a little while till the plating wears through.

18 ct solid gold is the metal you will need to wear.

If worn a little loose the watch will not let a lot of perspiration (a mildly acidic liquid) to build up which will facilitate the metal irritant from the reactive metals mentioned above to affect you.

I have read what you wrote. I also note that someone has told you something which you have taken to heart. I feel that the information you have been given is not correct.

You have not stated a single sign or symptom of an allergy. You state that your skin turns green. The greening is due to the oxidation (rusting) of the metal when it comes into contact with sweat and salt from your skin.

Use an antiperspirant on your skin and you will be just fine. Good luck.
